YouTube engagement rate calculator
One engagement percentage is the number a channel can most easily buy. This scores three signals together โ reach, reaction and real conversation โ and names the red flags that a single ratio hides.

What is a good YouTube engagement rate?
Engagement rate is likes plus comments divided by views. These bands are the ones the calculator scores against:
| Engagement rate | Verdict | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1% | Weak | Passive audience, or inflated view counts |
| 1โ2% | Below average | Watchable reach, little reaction |
| 2โ4% | Typical | The normal range for most YouTube channels |
| 4โ8% | Strong | An attentive audience that reliably reacts |
| Over 8% | Exceptional | Community-grade engagement โ verify it's genuine |
Smaller channels reliably post higher rates than very large ones, so compare a creator against channels of a similar size rather than against a platform-wide average.
What this scores, and why
Three signals, weighted. Read together they catch the inflated channels that a lone engagement percentage waves straight through.

Leave subscribers blank and the reach signal is dropped and the score rescaled, rather than counted as a failure. Frequently asked questions
What is a good engagement rate on YouTube?
For most YouTube channels, an engagement rate of 2โ4% of views is typical, 4โ8% is strong, and anything above 8% is exceptional. Below 1% is weak and usually means either a passive audience or inflated view counts. Engagement rate here means likes plus comments divided by views โ the standard formula. Smaller channels generally post higher rates than very large ones, so compare a creator against channels of a similar size rather than against the platform average.
How do you calculate YouTube engagement rate?
Add a video's likes and comments together, then divide by its view count. A video with 2,400 likes and 180 comments on 50,000 views has an engagement rate of 5.2%. Average across a creator's last 10 uploads rather than using a single video, and exclude Shorts โ they generate very different ratios and will skew the result.
How can I tell if a YouTube channel has fake engagement?
The clearest signal is healthy likes paired with almost no comments. Likes are cheap to buy in bulk and real comment threads are not, so a channel with a strong like ratio and fewer than about 0.5 comments per 1,000 views deserves a manual look. Other warning signs are a large subscriber count with very low views, more comments than likes (often a giveaway rather than genuine engagement), and generic or repetitive comment text.
Should I judge a channel on subscribers or engagement?
Engagement, every time. Subscriber count is a historical number that says nothing about how many people still watch. A 50,000-subscriber channel averaging 20,000 views reaches more people than a 500,000-subscriber channel averaging the same, and it will usually cost far less. Use views per subscriber to check whether the audience is still active, then price on views.
What is a good views-to-subscriber ratio on YouTube?
Roughly 5โ20% of subscribers watching an average upload is healthy. Above 20% indicates an unusually active audience and justifies a premium rate. Below 2% suggests a dormant or purchased subscriber base โ at that point the subscriber number is meaningless for pricing and you should negotiate purely on views.
